Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents, with the rookie cards of a young phenom by the name of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Featuring beautiful colours and centering that is just off from left-to-right along with relatively sharp corners and light edge wear that commonly plagues O-Pee-Chee cards of the era, this copy of card #18 picturing Wayne Gretzky that has just recently earned an EX-MT 6 designation from PSA leads the way for this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee complete set of 396 cards. The rest of the 395 cards that make up the set are also pleasing examples that fall in the same neighbourhood as the Gretzky, all found in a consistent grade range of EX-MT to NM after inspection. For the notables, the cardboard of 40-Salming, 150-Dryden (slightly off-center), 160-Dionne, 175-Howe, 185-Hull (slightly off-center top-to-bottom) and 200-Lafleur are seen as being in that EX-MT to NM territory while the cards of 125-Clarke (small ding bottom left), and 230-Bossy (2nd year card – small surface dent at the right side) are seen as slightly worse off at EX-MT. For the checklist cards, all three are unmarked and in the EX-MT to NM condition range while the three (3) new team logo cards and team checklist cards are also all unmarked and along with the other star cards, are all in a condition consistent with the rest of the set. A satisfying offering that should please our lucky winning bidder upon its arrival.
