Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Headlined by a trio of classic late-1980s O-Pee-Chee offerings, up for grabs here is this lot consisting of 1986-87, 1987-88, 1988-89 and 1990-91 complete sets. Starting with the ’86-87 assembly that finds itself in the high-grade condition range of EX-MT to NM, something that is seen consistent with all four sets being offered, the rookie cards of Patrick Roy, John Vanbiesbrouck and Wendel Clark are present, with the cardboard of “St. Patrick” displaying in the vicinity of EX-MT to NM with 65-35 centering and very slight wear to the bottom corners that is difficult to see on the front, while the two others are both in the range of EX-MT to NM as well. All the cards picturing “The Great One”, Wayne Gretzky remain in the condition range of EX-MT to NM as well as do the cards of Oilers teammates Paul Coffey and Mark Messier. To conclude the set, the cards of stars Ray Bourque, Steve Yzerman and Mario Lemieux are also all seen as being in the scope of EX-MT to NM while the checklist cards tell a tale much the same and are both unmarked. The 1987-88 set, once again comprised of 264-cards like the release before it, features an attractive design with a checklist that includes over 40 first year offerings such as those of 42-Robitaille, 123-Oates, 243-Damphousse, 233-Richer, 227-Lemieux, 215-Vernon, 169-Hextall, 13-Ranford, 7-Tikkanen and 2-Tocchet with all of the aforementioned cards laying claim to EX-MT to NM characteristics. Cards of Hall of Famers 15-Lemieux, 53-Gretzky, 56-Yzerman, 87-Bourque (60-40 centering), 99-Coffey, 112-Messier and 163-Roy are also present in the same condition range as well as the two unmarked checklist cards. For the last of the 1980s sets, is the 264-card 1988-89 set featuring the rookie cards of 16-Nieuwendyk, 66-Hull, 122-Shanahan and 194-Turgeon all having EX-MT to NM attributes while card #120 of Wayne Gretzky, his first in a Los Angeles Kings uniform, remains in similar condition. Cardboard picturing HOFer Mario Lemieux shows with a bit of printing fade that drops it down around EX to EX-MT while other keys of 73-Bourque, 93-Messier, 116-Roy, 179-Coffey and 196-Yzerman are all seen as being in the commonly present EX-MT to NM range with both checklists unmarked and in the same range. Finally, the 1990-91 release from O-Pee-Chee concludes the lot, complete with all 528-cards present in virtually pack fresh EX-MT to NM condition or better including all the set’s stars and rookies.
