Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Played in front of over 100,000 spectators in Ann Arbor, the 2014 Winter Classic witnessed an Original Six matchup as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 in a shootout with Joffrey Lupul potting a goal for the Leafs during the 1 on 1 post-overtime competition to determine a winner. Presented here, we have a Leafs jersey worn during the first period of play by then alternate captain, Joffrey Lupul. Made by Reebok, a “56” size tag sits affixed to the inner collar beneath a screened-on “NHL Winter Classic” wordmark. With NHL and Reebok crests over the front and back necklines of the tie-neck garment respectively, the front of the jersey is decorated with a felt Leafs team crest in white felt with affixed blue felt letters that spell out “Toronto Maple Leafs” while the alternate captain’s “A” has been added over the left breast. Accented over the right shoulder with the all-important 2014 Winter Classic event patch, the sleeves and verso have had Lupul’s number “19” sewn to them in white felt numerals that have been sewn on with a vintage-style sewing pattern while “Lupul” is spelt out in matching style letters across the affixed matching nameplate. Having been worn for just a single period of play, the jersey remains in beautiful condition and shows just light wear via a couple of small light board burns over the left sleeve. Showcasing a MeiGray patch numbered “K06548” that has been sewn inside the reverse hem, according to the company’s population report, the jersey is a “Blue w/A – Winter Classic 1/1/14 at Michigan Stadium (The Big House)” specimen. A beautiful piece, a matching MeiGray LOA will accompany the piece.
