A veteran of 678 National Hockey League games who was drafted 87th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Alexei Ponikarovsky would spend 477 of those games wearing the blue and white of the team that drafted him. Representing his native Ukraine at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, offered here is this jersey worn by Ponikarovsky during the Leafs 2002-03 pre-season campaign. Made by KOHO and having had both size “58” and “Made in Canada” tags affixed to the inner collar, a small handwritten “22” is penned to the underside of the “Made in Canada” tag in blue ballpoint pen. Having had a KOHO logo patch added over the reverse neckline and the NHL shield embroidered into the rear hem, the front of the jersey is decorated with a familiar Leafs team crest that has “Toronto Maple Leafs” embroidered into it while matching “TML” alternate logo crests reside over each shoulder. Having been accented over the sleeves and verso with Ponikarovsky’s number “22” in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals, “Ponikarovsky” is spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate. Exhibiting game-wear via stick marks over both sleeves and the reverse, numerous board burns are seen over both sleeves as well with one at the right elbow that has resulted in a small unrepaired hole. Additionally, a few blue coloured transfer marks are observed near the left elbow with a stain found near the bottom of the right cuff as well. Having had a MeiGray tag numbered “A05184” sewn inside the reverse hem, according to the company’s population report, the jersey is a “Blue Preseason” specimen. A matching MeiGray LOA will accompany.
