A veteran of 678 National Hockey League games who was drafted 87th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, Alexei Ponikarovsky would spend 477 of those games wearing the blue and white of the team that drafted him. Representing his native Ukraine at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, offered here is this photo-matched Maple Leafs jersey worn by Ponikarovsky during the 2003-04 season. Made by CCM and sporting a single size “58” tag that has been affixed to the inner collar, a CCM logo patch has been added over the reverse neckline while the NHL shield has been embroidered into the reverse hem. Decorated over the front with a familiar Maple Leafs team crest that has “Toronto Maple Leafs” embroidered, matching alternate logo “TML” patches reside over each shoulder. Having had Ponikarovsky’s number “23” sewn to the sleeves and verso in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals, “Ponikarovsky” is spelt out in single layer blue twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate. Exhibiting good game-wear, dark stick marks are seen throughout the front, reverse and both sleeves, small board burns that have resulted in unrepaired holes are observed over both sleeves as well along with pink coloured paint transfer marks behind the left shoulder and a fabric backed team repair at the lower reverse. Of note, the jersey also shows staining near the right cuff, collar areas, both shoulders and through the front crest. Having had a MeiGray patch numbered “B08395” sewn inside the reverse hem, according to the company’s population report, the jersey is a “White 1st Regular Season” specimen. A matching MeiGray LOA will accompany.
Regarding the photo-matches, the jersey is matched with Getty Image #2796224 (November 27th, 2003 vs Atlanta) to the dark stick mark near Alexei’s left cuff.
