Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023

One of the original 12 teams that competed in the first season of the WHA in 1972-73, the Los Angeles Sharks only lasted two seasons, but managed to reach the quarterfinals in the franchise's first campaign. The team would first relocate to Michigan in 1974-75 before landing in Baltimore. From the final season in Los Angeles, we have a Sharks jersey worn by Hal Willis. Differing from the inaugural season jerseys, with a tie-down collar as opposed to a V-neck, Rawlings labeling with "50" sizing is affixed to the collar. Styled with a Sharks team crest with chain-stitched detailing, "4" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in layered tackle twill, with "Willis" across the nameplate in single black twill. The vintage jersey also sports an intact garter-style fight strap, with evidence of a former nameplate which is the same size as the current nameplate, but was placed lower. Willis played 18 games for the Sharks in 1973-74 and is listed as wearing number 4 in programs, with Ralph MacSweyn also listed as wearing number 4 in programs, playing 13 games for the Sharks in 1973-74, so the jersey was possibly worn by him as well. Regarding condition, there is a hole to the left sleeve from a material pull, with a tiny hole on the right sleeve resulting from a board burn. There is also pilling on the interior of the jersey and some fraying/stretch marks on the inner sleeves, with puckering visible to the interior, on the back of the team crest/numbers.
