Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

The name of Gerry Schultz is well known among old goalies from Western Canada and collectors of vintage masks alike. This Edmonton mask maker fitted pros and amateurs in the Edmonton area throughout the Sixties and Seventies with his clients including WHA and NHL goalies such as Ken Brown, Chris Worthy, Jack Norris and most notably Grant Fuhr during his time with the Victoria Cougars of the WHL and his early days in Edmonton. Up for grabs here, is this mask made by Schultz. Made of a heavy fiberglass, the mask was originally crafted in the 1970s for amateur goalie Dave Hewko who played for the Camrose Vikings in Alberta. Featuring a custom painted firebird design over each cheek and the number “30” over the chin, the mask retains all the original padding on the interior as well the rare Cooper SK2 backplate with the leather strap on the right side broken. Displaying a very clear and legible Gerry Schultz manufacturing stamp on the interior at the forehead with an additional stamp reading “D. Hewko” the mask shows good game-use via puck and stick marks with red marks seen throughout the right side of the piece along with a large chip just above the right eye. An additional small crack is seen at the bottom of the right eye while minor staining is present on the interior. A true relic of the past These high quality vintage fiberglass affairs are all but drying up in the hobby, especially examples produced by prominent makers so don’t miss out!
