Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
The Hart Trophy winner in 1934, Aurele Joliat would help the Montreal Canadiens to three Stanley Cup championships during his 16-season National Hockey League career and was the league’s career games played leader at the time of his retirement, suiting up for a total of 655 contests, all spent wearing the famed bleu, blanc et rouge. Up on the auction block here, is this freshly graded copy of Joliat’s 1925 Dominion Chocolate V31 card. Displaying with the tab still found at the bottom of card, Joliat’s cardboard stands as #119 in the challenging 120-card set and is one of 32 examples relating to hockey that are found in the checklist. Deemed worthy of a very respectable VG-EX 4 from the graders, the PSA population report tells the tale of this copy being bested by only four other examples, two EX 5’s (one with a qualifier designation), one EX-MT 6 and one NM 7. Although labeled “1925” by PSA, hobby veteran and author Bobby Burrell points to 1924-25 for this issue, the first of two multi-card sets paying tribute to Canada’s top athletic performers of the day.
