1888 N29 Allen & Ginter marked the second straight year the tobacco company issued a 50-card World Champions set in its cigarette packages featuring athletes carrying titles such as runners, cyclists, pedestrians, hammer throwers, pole vaulters, high jumpers, tennis players and weight lifters. Offered here, is this collection of twenty-seven (27) 1888 Allen & Giter N29 cards. Unnumbered, the cards feature a lithographic image of the featured athlete on the fronts on top of a white background while the full checklist is listed on the reverse, categorized by sport. Including the cards of C.A.J. Queckberner (Shot Put), Willie Harradon (Cyclist), H.G. Crocker (Cyclist), Wm. A. Rowe (Cyclist), Ralph Temple (Cyclist), W. J. M. Barry (12lb Hammer), Hugh McCormack (Skater), R. D. Sears (Tennis), Dr. James Dwight (Tennis), Axel Paulsen (Skater), H. W. Slocum Jr. (Tennis), Thomas Pettitt (Tennis), Fred Wood (Cyclist), Percy Stone (Cyclist), W. E. Crist (Cyclist), E. D. Lange (Walker), C. W. V. Clarke (Walker), Wm. O’Connor (Oarsman), L. E. Myers (Runner), Patrick Fitzgerald (Go As You Please), W.B. Page (Track), James Albert (Go As You Please), Wm. Cummings (Runner), Gus Hill (Club Swinger), Wm. G. East (Oarsman), Capt. Paul Boyton (Swimmer) and F. F. Ives (Cyclist), all the cards were glued down at some point with some showing paper loss on their backs while others have staining and/or glues residues and/or other marks while the unlucky ones of the bunch show a combination of everything. Despite this, the cards remain crease free with many having sharp corners and most of the front images display beautifully with nice colours that makes the group very appealing despite the cards falling into a low-end grade range of authentic/poor/fair due to the flaws on the reverses.
