Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

A captivating high-grade example of Wayne Gretzky's 1979-80 rookie card is offered here, with bright vivid colors that pop, respectable centering, smooth edges, sharp corners and an immaculate-looking surface all striking the beholder. Receiving PSA’s near perfect mark of MINT 9 with an (OC) designation underneath, card #18 in the likes of which were first available during The Great One's initial NHL campaign, with Topps wax packs selling for 20 cents. Wax trays (featuring three wax packs) and bags of "Fun Packs" (a mix of hockey and other wax packs that totaled 30 packs) also could have yielded the attractive blue-bordered cards. It is difficult to spot flaws in the offered example though intense focus and magnification allow us to see the absolute lightest touches of wear to the top left and bottom right corners on the front with very light wear along the bottom edge as well. On the reverse, similar extremely light wear touches are present at the bottom corners with the right side showing a bit easier than the left. Of course, the image on the front of the card displays just to the right off-center and is what contributes to the (OC) on the label. When looking at the PSA POP Report, 9185 copies of Wayne’s first-year cardboard issued by Topps have been graded with the example presented here one of 80 ''Mint 9'' that received a qualifier with 128 others receiving a ''Mint 9'' status and just two receiving a perfect ''10''. Housed in a PSA holder, only a small number of very light scratches/scuffs on each side are worth noting. A fantastic present to yourself this formidable and tempting Gretz RC can be.
