Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/28/2023
At onetime proudly displayed on the counters of places such as drug stores, convivence stores and candy shops as well as anywhere else that stocked them, up for grabs here is this pair of empty wax pack boxes from 1972-73 O-Pee-Chee (3rd Series) and 1979-80 hockey releases. Once filled to the brim with colourful wax packs just waiting to be ripped open by youngsters looking for the hot rookie cards of names such as Gretzky, Orr, Lafleur, Bossy and Dryden, the 1972-73 box is brightly coloured with action shots over the lid and both the left and right sides. Showing a 3rd series designation on the lid that also tells the tale of cards picturing WHA players able to be found inside, the bottom of the box shows some of the items one could redeem Bazooka gift certificates for. Showing the original pack price of .10 cents as well as the pack count of 36 and 8 cards per pack, the box remains in excellent condition with light very light handling and wear seen throughout. Mainly on the bottom as well as the corners and edges.
For the 1979-80 box, also in relatively good condition though a bit worse off than its older included counterpart, some toning is observed throughout as well as surface and handling wear in the same areas as mentioned above just slightly heavier while the sides of the fold up display have ripped and been taped on the underside. Showing action images on the lid and three of the four sides as well as the lid and a Bazooka ad on the back side, the lid displays the fact that packs had doubled in price to .20 cents and that the four new NHL teams that joined the league from the WHA were also included. Formerly holding 48 packs with 14 cards per pack, one can only ponder about how many Gretzky rookie cards were once inside the boxes four cardboard walls.
