Fully taking hold at every corner of the globe and earning the title of the world’s most popular sport, soccer grabs attention like no other sporting spectacle in the world with 1.5 billion people worldwide tuning into the 2022 World Cup Final. Up for grabs here, is this collection of twenty-one (21) soccer cards dating between the 1930s and 2010s with examples showcasing Stanley Matthews, Ferenc Puskas, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham. Including a trio of 1930s offerings of Stanley Matthews that have been graded by CGA (Card Grading Australia), cards picturing the Stoke City star include a 1934 Ardath “50 Famous Footballers RC that has earned a 48 EXC, a 1935-36 W.D. & H.O. Wills “Association Footballers” that has been graded a 43 VG and a 1936 Godfrey Phillips Ltd “International Caps” that has been deemed worthy of a 55 EXC. Cards picturing Hungarian star Ferenc Puskas total five (5) with four (4) having been graded. For the graded offerings, the oldest is found in the form of Puskas’ 1954 A&BC rookie card that has earned a FR 1.5 from PSA and is followed up by examples from 1958 Kane Products Ltd. (PSA NM-MT 8), 1959 Heinerle (PSA GOOD 2 MK) and 1970 Panini (SGC GD+ 2.5) while a raw ungraded form of Puskas’ 1956-65 Swedish Rekord Magazine is found having been rough cut by hand in presenting in the range of FR to G condition. Other graded cards include a 1978 Sportscaster #18-427 of Real Madrid (PSA NM-MT+ 8.5) a 1979 Industria Agentina #18 Diego Maradona RC (PSA PR 1), a 2006 Panini World Cup #185 Lionel Messi RC (PSA EX 5), a 2006 Panini World Cup #298 Cristiano Ronaldo RC (SGC EX-NM+ 6.5), a pair of 2005 Topps England #60 and #88 cards of David Beckham (Both BCCG 10 Mint or Better) and a 2006 UK Tradition of David Beckham (PGi 10 Gem Mint). For ungraded cards, Sport Kings speicmens containing memorabilia worn by Pele and Freddy Adu as well as Pele, Giorgio Chinaglia and Brandi Chastain are included with the latter hand numbered “4/9” on the reverse with both displaying in an EX-MT to NM condition range. The last three cards include a 2015-16 Panini Flawless Soccer “Pitch Perfect” autograph card of Jozy Altidore that is numbered “02/10” and signed with a blue ink autograph that displays without issue, a 2016 Topps Apex Soccer memorabilia card of Sebastian Giovinco that has numbered “47/50” and another Giovinco memorabilia card from 2016 Topps MLS that is serial numbered “03/25”. All three cards display in a mirroring condition range of EX-MT to NM.
It must be noted that the grading standards followed by CGA, PGi and BCCG may not correspond to those currently employed by PSA, BGS or SGC. The outcome of an attempted cross-over of this piece through any of those services, then, would be uncertain and cannot be guaranteed.
