Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
As close as one can get to a complete assembly, offered here is this collection of Hockey Blueline magazines that hail from the 1950s that includes forty (40) of its (41) released issues. One of the most popular of the plethora of hockey and sports magazines that emerged during the decade, Blueline magazine was the hockey monthly of choice throughout its all-too-brief run. Led by the inaugural October 1954 issue that pictures Gordie Howe on the cover staring down the rest of the NHL team pennants, the group concludes with the May 1959 swan song cover featuring Tex Coulter's montage portrait of the 1958-59 First All-Star Team. Missing only the May 1958 issue (Maurice Richard and Norman Richard cover), The work of renowned sports artist Tex Coulter’s strikingly lifelike portraits of hockey stars such as Beliveau, Worsley, Howe, Geoffrion, Bathgate, Mahovlich, Gadsby, and Maurice and Henri Richard graced the covers of the latter editions of this fondly remembered Montreal-based hockey monthly. Remaining in a fairly consistent and uniform condition throughout most of the included issues, many earlier issues from 1954 and 1955 exhibit spine wear, creasing, the odd small tear and moderate-to-heavy toning, with a few examples showing spotting as well. Most of the later issues exhibit lighter handling wear, with toning only a light factor, with the odd small crease, corner ding or stain exhibited along with pencil/pen marks present on the covers of April 1956 and December 1957. Of note, the last issue, May 1959, is the only one that has an address stamp with wear to a few edges on the inner pages also exhibited while the rest are all newsstand copies. A wonderful group of publications to send yourself back in time with.
