One of the NHL’s legendary innovators as the first to regularly wear and develop the goal mask, Jacques Plante was also instrumental in helping to evolve the goaltending position itself, with his forays from the crease chasing loose pucks now commonplace amongst netminders. This lot features a collection of 26 vintage media and wire photos of Jake the Snake during his time with the Montreal Canadiens (1952-63), New York Rangers (1963-65) and St Louis Blues (1968-70). Mostly in the 8" x 10" range with a few slightly smaller, five of the photos are from the playoffs including Game 3 of the 1960 Stanley Cup finals (won by Montreal 5-2), along with a photo of Plante during his first game in The Big Apple as a New York Ranger. The wire photos have captions, and total 10, while the media photos with stamps and notations on each reverse including from United Press and UPI Telephoto, totaling approx 11. Each black and white photo shows Plante in game-action, with a number of impressive and thought-provoking images. The majority of the photos are in excellent condition with just some handling wear and no obtrusive marks or damage aside from the odd crease or wrinkle.
