Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
Coaching the University of Toronto Hockey Team - known as the Varsity Grads - for a number of seasons during the mid-1920s before taking over the Maple Leafs, Conn Smythe led the grads to the 1927 Allan Cup championship, with the club also chosen to represent Canada at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St Moritz, where they went undefeated and won gold. We offer a panoramic photo of the 1927 Allan Cup champs, along with a Toronto pennant and 1927 hockey crest. At 8 1/2" x 29", the full team is lined up, including Smythe, along with goaltender Joe Sullivan, Dave Trottier, Hugh Plaxton and others. Blue paper has been affixed to each side to represent the main team colour, with the photographer listed over the bottom right. There is some age wear with minor spotting and a few small stains. The pennant is 29" with intact tassels and a clipped tip, with soft felt letters affixed to soft felt background. The small crest has crossed hockey sticks with "1927". We should note that while the consignor associated these items together, we are unsure if the pennant or crest represent the hockey team or even the U of Toronto.
