Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
Originating from the very first season of the NHL Expansion that saw the close of the famed Original Six era, we offer a photo-matched Detroit Red Wings jersey worn by Ted Hampson and Gary Unger. First worn by Hampson for 19 games beginning at the start of the 1967-68 NHL season, Hampson was then traded to Oakland on Jan 8, 1968, with no other player wearing the #16 until the arrival of Unger from a trade with Toronto. Beginning on March 21, 1968, Unger would wear the #16 sweater for four home games. Sporting a tattered Olympic label to the collar, the vintage red durene sweater measures-out to roughly a size 50. Styled with the iconic chain-stitched Red Wings team crest, "16" is sewn to the sleeves and verso in single white twill, with a washed-out General Athletics label on the inside hem. No fight strap was ever attached to the garment. Showing use with numerous team repairs, including four larger examples over the lower front, additional repairs are present on the right sleeve (3). There is a small hole from a material stretch near the left elbow, with a slit over the lower reverse. Photo-matched to Hampson by particularities within the team crest, an image of Unger seem to show the fold pattern along the left sleeve, but the image is not clear enough to call a definitive photo-match. This Motor City treasure will be accompanied by a detailed LOA.
