Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

Somewhat fascinating is the thought of this Maurice Richard card being pulled from a Parkhurst pack just a few months after the famous Richard Riot, with the Rocket's suspension late in the 1954-55 season resulting in him not winning the scoring title or the Canadiens the Stanley Cup, (along with much damage on Ste. Catherine street!). Richard and the Habs embarked on the '55-56 campaign extra-motivated and proceeded to win a still-record five consecutive Cup titles between 1956 and 1960. The Rocket's 422 goals to start the season are mentioned on the back here, as well as the suspension, with this copy of his card #37 in the 1955-56 Parkhurst set garnering a grade of EX-MT 6 with an “MC” (miscut) qualifier from the graders at PSA. With the spots the carelessness of the blade cut the card easily seen at both the left and right edges on the reverse, the card displays admirably with good colours and only light fading, something that commonly plagues this release, seen to the red on the lower front while the corners remain relatively sharp despite touches of wear to all four. Trailing only hat of Jacques Plante's rookie in terms of importance/value in the challenging and ever-popular '55-56 Parkie set, the PSA holder the card is housed in sports presents beautifully having been well cared for and shows just the odd light scratch.
