Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/3/2023
The legend of one of the premier pre-NHL scoring sensations is brought forth with this captivating image of Joe Malone, the Quebec Bulldogs’ center who led his team to the Stanley Cup the same season that this relic was originally discovered in a pack of cigarettes, scoring 21 times in 18 National Hockey Association games. The Bulldogs then defeated Moncton in two straight games in a best-of-3 challenge to retain the Cup, with Malone contributing five more tallies. “Phantom Joe” rifled 43 goals in 20 NHA games in 1912-13 as Quebec defended its Cup title and was still scoring when the NHL was formed five years later, tallying a record 44 in 20 games with the Canadiens. Regarded as one of the most beautiful hockey card sets of all-time and perhaps the nicest of all the tobacco releases made, Malone is the subject here over the front of card #4 in the 1911-12 Imperial Tobacco C55 release. Serving as his rookie card and seen with his right hand over the top of his stick, this copy of Malone’s first-year cardboard has earned a very respectable grade of VG-EX 4 with most of the wear kept to the edges and corners with just light amounts seen over the front and reverse sides. The PSA holder remains in excellent condition, showing just light scratches/scuffs worth mentioning.
