There’s no mistaking the distinctive look of an Ernie Higgins goalie mask. The renowned Boston-area mask maker fabricated fiberglass wonders for a number of NHL goalies including Gerry Cheevers and Ed Johnston of the big, bad Bruins. This desirable circa late-1960s Higgins mask is the prototypical example, sporting a clean off-white surface with period but not original strapping and interior padding found on the reverse side. Remaining solid and structurally sound, the mask measures 9" top to bottom and sports wear via a number of marks, chips to the edges, scratches and other abrasions throughout that appear to originate from game-use. A couple of small cracks to the first layers of the mask (but not going all the way through) are observed just above the area between the eyes, over the left eye edge, the very top edge and behind the right ear of the mask as well. It should also be noted that small areas of red paint transfer are seen on the mask’s left side with small amounts of blue on the right side as well while the padding on the inside and Cooper branded elastic and leather strap harness shows soiling with some cracking to the leather as well from age. Additionally, the eyes of the mask were widened and there is a possibility that the mask was cut down from a full face which would have occurred at a later time after the mask was made and not done by Higgins himself.
