Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
While it’s hard for any modern hockey adherent to imagine netminders roaming the crease bare-faced, that was entirely the case for the majority of the sport’s existence. Originating from the formative days of head gear protection, we have a rare circa late-1950s Louch plexiglass goal mask that comes with its original box and instruction/care sheet. Advertised as "18-oz" in the aforementioned 8 ½” x 11” instruction/care sheet, the mask feature’s the original red leather strapping and matching-leather covered chin padding, along with the chin hook designed to secure the still present neck strap. Likely to have never been used, the mask still shows a number of scratches and marks over its surface that is worth mentioning for accuracy while the trade mark seal seen over the chin has largely flaked off over time. With this style mask used by both Terry Sawchuk and Johnny Bower in practices, the care/instruction sheet mentions “Now compulsory practice mask for Red Wings Hockey Association”. For the original box, describing the mask as “shatter-proof” once again over the front in red letters with the model number “9000” stamped below, the condition remains in the range of good with normal wear and tear from age being observed with a pen ink scribble on one side while measurements come out to roughly 8” x 8” x 6”. The including instruction/care sheet is also in good condition for its age, showing fold lines and toning with small tears to the edge as well.
