Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
After a two-year hiatus, Topps was back producing hockey cards for the 1957-58 season, once again featuring members of the four U.S.-based teams, with important rookie and star cards contributing to the 66-card effort presented here. Found to be in an overall high-grade EX-MT to NM condition range with some cards presenting a bit lesser by being in the scope of EX to EX-MT, the set includes freshly graded PSA examples of key rookies of Glenn Hall (PSA EX-MT 6), Pierre Pilote (PSA NM-MT 8), Norm Ullman (PSA EX 5) and Johnny Bucyk (PSA VG-EX 4) along with superstars Terry Sawchuk (PSA NM 7) and Gordie Howe (PSA EX-MT 6). For the notables cards that remain ungraded, the group is paced by EX-MT to NM examples of 14-Simmons RC (off-center), 48-Kelly and 53-Worsley (70-30 centering) while being followed up by an EX-MT range copy of card #15 of Allan Stanley that has a light factory ink bleed at the top right. Closed out by EX to EX-MT cards of Ted Lindsay (small ding at the top right corner) and Andy Bathgate (small ding at the top right corner) as well as a VG-EX to EX example of card #34 picturing Alex Delvecchio that shows off-center at the top and side, light surface snow is also present as well as a print mark on the right side. Including an extra copy of Jack Caffery’s card, it should also be noted that the last card in the set of Dave Creighton shows light elastic marks that are worth pointing out for accuracy.
