Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 4/30/2024
Enjoying a complete lifetime in hockey, Max McNab would do it all during his career, everything from winning a Stanley Cup as a player in the National Hockey League to serving as Vice President of Hockey Operations with the New Jersey Devils. Also having served as a long-time coach in the old Western Hockey League as well as General Manager of the NHL's Washington Capitals and New Jersey Devils along with Team Canada at the 1982 IIHF World Championships, offered here is this collection of memorabilia from McNab's personal collection revolving around the world of international hockey and various events. Paced by a pair of watches that don't appear to be in working order upon inspection, the first is a simple Tiffany & Co made example that sports a black leather band and is engraved on the back with "With Thanks - NHL Managers - 2.5.96" that was most likely presented to him when he retired from the NHL while the other, a similar one made by Wittnauer that has the NHLPA and NHL logos over the face, is engraved on the back with "Sweden 1980" and is said to have been given to McNab by Arne Stromberg, a good friend of his who was a scout for Washington when Max was GM, just before the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Both watches appear in visually good condition with light wear observed on both while the leather bands show varying degrees of wear and have both hardened. Moving on, also included with the lot is; a "giant" postcard displaying a team photo of the Trail Smoke Eaters squad that represented Canada at the 1963 IIHF World Championships (glue residue on the reverse and some light edge/corner wear), a February 9th, 1979 dinner program/menu from the NHL Challenge Cup that was done as a tribute to Clarence Campbell (light handling wear, toning and bends/warping - heaviest at top right hand corner), a pair of 1976 Canada Cup programs, one being the in-arena version and the other being the souvenir newsstand example with both showing light-to-moderate wear to the covers with light creasing, some toning, edge and corner wear plus some surface wear), a 1979 NHL Challenge Cup program (very light handling wear - couple of small surface scuffs/residue spots near the top and a light crease) and a pair of souvenir programs from the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in Lake Placid, New York that have both been signed by Mark Johnson of Team USA over the front in black marker that displays well and without issue. Additionally, one of the Olympic programs also includes a souvenir event logo patch. Finally, rounding out the lot is a pair of 1973 NCAA stick pins that remain in good condition and a 1972 Munich Olympics USSR National Team bronze medal that also remains in good condition with just light handling wear observed. A McNab Family LOA will accompany the piece.
