Taken to Hôpital St-Luc after Earl Seibert inadvertently fell on the superstar, breaking his leg, Howie Morenz believed his career was over, and depression set in during his hospital stay in February of 1937. On March 8, Morenz began complaining of chest pains, which doctors attributed to a heart attack. Mary Morenz and Cecil Hart were called to the hospital; around 11:30 pm, Morenz tried to get out of bed to use the washroom but collapsed on the floor and died from a coronary embolism caused by blood clots from his damaged leg. This real photo postcard pictures the ailing star in his hospital bed on February 25th, and is considered the last image ever taken of Morenz. Pictured sitting up with pipe in hand, "Last Photo of Howie Morenz Feb 25 1937" appears in the bottom right corner, with additional handwritten text in French on the reverse listing the date of his death. The postcard shows condition issues including creasing, toning and corner wear, with some discolouration to the reverse. Accompanying the postcard, we have a vintage 3" x 4 1/2" photo of Morenz posed in his swimming gear. Leaning along a rock, the background shows a waterfall, with Morenz all smiles. "1938" is written above (obviously wrong), and "Howie Morenz" along the base. The photo shows wear and creases, and is mounted to a cardboard backing covered in newsprint.
