Considered by many to be among the most beautiful and artistic cards to ever be released, the 1888 Allen & Ginter N28 The World’s Champions set consists of 50 cards displaying lithographic images of many sporting champions from throughout the world in things such as wrestling, rifle shooters, billiards, rowing, pugilists and of course, baseball. Originally inserted into 10-count packages of cigarettes made by the company, up for grabs here is this near complete set of 1888 Allen & Ginter N28 The World’s Champions. Led by a quartet of freshly graded offerings from the headquarters of PSA, the key cards of John L. Sullivan and Jack Dempsey led the way in terms of value and importance, garnering marks of EX-MT 6 and VG 3 respectively, while the cards of Hon. W. F. Cody and Miss Anne Oakley display designations of VG-EX 4 (MK) and VG 3 (MK). For the rest of the cards, all existing currently in raw ungraded form, only the 10 cards of baseball players are not included and keep the set from being complete. Mostly found in the condition range of G to VG with a few better and few worse examples present, the cards presenting as better in our opinions include those displaying the imagery of Geo. F. Slosson (billiards), Albert Hamm (oarsman) and Theo. Bauer (wrestling). Cards found to be worse off than those in the previously mentioned fairly consistent condition range of G to VG total four (4) and include the cardboard of John McMahon (wrestling – stamp on back), Capt. A.H. Bogardus (rifle shooter – creases and heavy toning/staining on the reverse), Geo. H. Hosmer (oarsman – creases and edge wear) and Joe Acton (wrestling – heavy crease). Most of the cards show commonly seen flaws such as corner and edge wear along with toning/staining to the reverses but despite this, most of the fronts display very well with nice colours. Additionally, two extra (doubles) cards are included with the group, those of Jacob Gaudaur (oarsman) and the other of John McMahon (wrestling).
