Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
Hailing from an era of hockey when Wayne Gretzky was starting his sheer domination of the National Hockey League, up for grabs here is this collection of three (3) early-1980s O-Pee-Chee releases from 1980-81, 1981-82 and 1982-83 with all three (3) complete and consisting of 396-cards each. Starting with the 1980-81 assembly, the important 2nd year card of “The Great One” as well as his “All-Star” example and the Oilers team checklist picturing the phenom are all in the range of EX-MT/NM condition, something that is consistent throughout the whole group, with the checklist remaining unmarked. The rookie cards of Goulet, Bourque and Messier are seen in the vicinity of EX-MT, showing light corner wear or in the case of the Goulet, a small ding at the top left. Rounding out the RC’s to note, the examples of Mike Gartner and Rod Langway are seen in the range of EX-MT/NM as well. Three other Gretzky record breaker/leader cards are included within the group of 396, joining unmarked team and main series checklists.
For the ’81-82’s, representing Wayne’s third season, the set is once again in a uniform condition range of EX-MT/NM and is highlighted by the rookie cards of Denis Savard, Jarri Kurri, Paul Coffey, Dino Ciccarelli and Peter Stastny, all displaying characteristics that put them in the previously mentioned EX-MT/NM scope. Gretzky is of course a commonplace find, appearing over the front of six (6) different cards, all of which are found in the vicinity of EX-MT/NM except for card #125, his “Super Action” card, that falls to EX-MT+ due to 90-10 centering. Joined by 2nd year cards of Ray Bourque and Mark Messier that are also in the range of EX-MT/NM, it is no surprise to us that all three of the checklists are in matching condition and unmarked as well.
Completing the trio is the ensemble from ’82-83. Once again in a consistent EX-MT/NM condition range except for card #210 of Denis Potvin which displays creases, the RC of Grant Fuhr leads the way and is joined by other freshmen including Ron Francis, Joe Mullen and Dale Hawerchuk, all in the same EX-MT/NM scope condition wise. Gretzky is featured on nine (9) cards, all in the same condition vicinity while his teammates Paul Coffey and Mark Messier (#101 and #117) match “The Great One” condition wise, finishing out the collection of sets at EX-MT/NM. Seldomly handled and an excellent opportunity for both collectors and investors alike, don’t let these pass you by!
