A decade that saw only the Montreal Canadiens, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers win Lord Stanley’s coveted Cup, offered here is this classic trio of mid-to-late-1970s O-Pee-Chee hockey releases from 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-79. Starting with the ’76-77 ensemble, the 396-card checklist is paced by the RC of Bryan Trottier with this particular copy of card #115 displaying VG range because of multiple creases. With the whole set in a lower grade G/VG to VG/EX range on average, other key cards include those of 70-Clarke (VG – scuff on the back and rounded corners), 163-Lafleur (G/VG – crease and corner wear), 200-Dryden (G/VG – crease and corner wear) and 213-Orr (VG – off-center right-to-left and corner wear). The checklist cards, #116, #258 and #377 all have a few boxes marked with the first two in the range of VG while the last of the trio is closer that of G due to a crease
The ’77-78 set, lacking and real star rookie cards, is presented in an average condition range of VG/EX to EX and includes the team logo subset cards that fall between #322 and #339 on the checklist. Led by an EX example of Ken Dryden, he is joined by a VG-EX/EX specimen of his blueliner Larry Robinson. Other key cards include those of 110-McDonald (VG/EX), 115-Clarke (VG/EX – corner wear), 140-Salming (VG – surface dent), 200-Lafleur (VG/EX – corner wear) and 251-Orr (VG/EX – corner wear). Two of the three checklists, #68 and #381, are found in EX range while the last one, #249, is seen in the vicinity of VG-EX/EX. All three remain unmarked while the set includes seven (7) more Lafleur leaders cards. Of note, the team checklist cards, #71-88, are also all unmarked except for #81.
Completing the trio, the ’78-79 set is paced by the first year card of Mike Bossy with this particular copy showing in the condition range of VG/EX with 90-10 centering. Joined by fellow rookies Bernie Federko and Dave Taylor who are both in matching condition, the rest of the set displays in a uniform average of VG/EX like the trio of key rookies. Star/key cards in the same condition include 1-Bossy Rookie Record, 50-Dryden, 90-Lafleur, 215-Clarke and 300-Orr. The three checklist cards are all in EX-MT range and are unmarked while the team checklists are also unmarked except for #’s 192 and 193 while #203 shows damage on the back.
