Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023

Fascinating treasures here were collected by consumers who would discover them when opening up a Paulin's Premium Hockey Bar, with one card accompanying each candy bar, manufactured by Winnipeg's Paulin Chambers Company. The firm had branches in other cities and the players featured toiled in the Western Canada Hockey League (1924-25) and Western Hockey League ('25-26) for such teams as the Saskatoon Sheiks, Edmonton Eskimos, Calgary Tigers, Regina Capitals, Vancouver Maroons and Victoria Cougars. A full set of cards could be redeemed for a hockey stick or box of chocolates, with submitted cards returned either stamped on the back or with a punch hole in them. Although they've long been catalogued as a 1923-24 issue, extensive research by hobby veteran and author Bobby Burrell points to a two-year promotion beginning a year later, thus giving a 1924-26 time frame for the cards. Led by a pair of freshly slabbed PSA offerings, card #38 of Newsy Lalonde has garnered a mark of GOOD 2 while goaltending legend George Hainsworth’s card has been deemed worthty of a VG-EX 4 designation. For the raw offerings, the ten (10) standout names of the set other than the two that have already been graded, card #22 of Dick Irvin leads the way in the range of G to VG with the redemption stamp gracing the reverse while creases decorate the card. Those found in close proximity include the cards of 30-Stanley (RC - creases including a long one), 35-Cook (RC – stamp redemption and multiple creases), 41-Simpson (RC – creases including a long one), 63-Gardner (RC – surface creases and creases throughout) and 69-Oliver (RC – stamp redemption and multiple creases). For the final four notables, the specimens of 62-Dutton (RC – multiple creases and heavy wear to the corners) and 70-Crawford (RC – small creases and paper loss on front) are seen as being in the range of FR to G while card #28, George Hay’s RC, is found in the scope of FR with a long crease and is missing a piece of the bottom left corner. The final card, #15 displaying the image of Lorne Chabot (RC), brings up the rear with his offering in the scope of PR to FR condition, showing multiple creases and small stains.
The rest of the set includes VG-EX to EX examples of Bill Borland and Danny Cox, VG to VG-EX cards of 9-O’Meara, 19-Brydge, 36-Reise (stamp redemption), 40-Scott, 44-Arbour, 49-Sparrow, 50-McGregor, 57-Langtry, 58-Sommers and 68-Reid and G to VG cards of 3-Hughes, 24-McCusker, 29-Moran, 34-Elmer (stamp redemption), 45-Keats (stamp redemption), 48-Morrison, 53-Fraser, 61-Oatman and 67-Wilson.
Cards falling towards the lower end of the grade scale include G (GOOD) examples of #’s 2, 7, 11 (stamp redemption), 12, 14 (stamp redemption), 16, 21 (stamp redemption), 23, 25 (stamp redemption), 31, 32, 42 (stamp redemption), 46, 47, 51, 52 (stamp redemption), 54, 55, 59, 64, 65 (stamp redemption) and 66 (stamp redemption), FR to GOOD specimens of #’s 6, 8, 10, 13, 17, 20, 33, 37, 43, 56 and 60 and lastly, PR to FR cards of 4, 5-Browne (hole punched), 26 and 27-McVeigh. Additionally, six extra copies of cards 6-Roberts (hole punched), 8-Comfort (hole punched), 24, 30, 64-Morris (hole punched) and 70 are included, ranging in conditions from PR to FR up to G to VG. Splendid scarcities that are sure to enhance a pre-war/encapsulated card shrine.
