Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/29/2023
Three beauty sets from the mid-1980’s, offered up are these classic O-Pee-Chee assemblies chalked full of rookie/HOF/star cards of the era which for the most part are in nice uniform EX-MT to NM condition range throughout with all three assumed to be complete.
Starting with the oldest grouping of the trio, the 1984-85 release, found to be in an overall condition range of EX-MT to NM for its effort, features a total of 396 total cards with all of the set's checklist cards unmarked as well. Featuring a strong rookie class, the key first-year card of Steve Yzerman is seen as being in the scope of EX-MT condition due to a tiny amount of wear to the bottom right corner while the other notable rookies including those of 18-Barrasso, 129-LaFontaine, 185-Gilmour, 259-Chelios and 327-Neely are all in the top end condition proximity of EX-MT to NM. For the star cards, Wayne Gretzky's main series card (#243) and his record breaker card (#388) are both also included in the EX-MT to NM range examples while the set's lead off card of Ray Bourque is around EX-MT like the Yzerman due to tiny corner dings at the top right and bottom left. Of note, all the rest of the stars in the checklist plus the other Gretzky leaders cards are all in the same previously mentioned EX-MT to NM vicinity.
Moving on to the 1985-86 release, once again in the family uniform condition range of EX-MT to NM throughout with some exceptions, one of the noteworthy ones happens to affect the set's key rookie card of Mario Lemieux (#9), which is seen as being in the range of FR to G due to a large crease at the top right as well as another at the bottom left. For the rest of the key cards, those of 84-Muller RC, 85-Coffey, 111-Lindbergh, 120-Gretzky, 177-Messier, 237-MacInnis RC and 262-Lemieux RSL are all in the top end range of EX-MT to NM while the 2nd year offering of Steve Yzerman is around EX to EX-MT because of a small corner ding at the top left and the card of Ray Bourque, which is found at #40 on the checklist, presents in the proximity of GOOD because of a crease at the right side. Of note, all the checklist cards remain in an unmarked state and the other Gretzky and star cards in the set remain in a condition consistent with the rest of the set.
Finally, for the 1986-87 OPC hockey release, another collection of cardboard seen as being in the condition state of EX-MT to NM, rookie cards found in the top end EX-MT to NM condition include the key offering of Montreal Canadiens goalie Patrick Roy as well as John Vanbiesbrouck and Wendel Clark. For the star cards, 3-Gretzky and 11-Yzerman are both also in a EX-MT to NM proximity while the 2nd year card of Mario Lemieux is a bit lesser than its counterparts, falling to EX-MT vicinity due a small amount of wear at the top border. Once again, the checklist cards are all unmarked and the other stars plus Gretzky offerings are all in a condition that is consistent with the rest of the set. Additionally, accompanying the lot and getting you the best bang for your buck are complete mini sets of 1986-87 OPC Leaders (marked checklist and discoloured) and 1988-89 OPC NHL Stars (all EX-MT to NM).
