Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Beginning in 1912, and lasting through the 1930s, H.A. Proulx produced handmade hockey sticks for the Ottawa Senators as well as other NHL players, with his business located in the Ottawa Arena, and later after 1923, at the Ottawa Auditorium. Many photos exist of period players using sticks with "H.A. Proulx" stamped. This goal stick is the only example of his work we have ever seen or handled at Classic, and it's accompanied by an equally rare advertising poster that, according to our knowledge, is the only known example. The stick features a rounded paddle top - common for the era, with H.A. Proulx stamped on both sides of the paddle, along with "Ottawa Auditorium". The original tape remains on the paddle, blade and knob, with the stick showing good use which includes a few cracks to the paddle. We should also note that this is the exact type of model that both Alec Connell and Bill Beveridge used with the Senators. The stiff stock poster is approx 14" x 23 1/2", and designed for a player to place his current stick on the diagram to get the proper lie (angle the blade sits on the ice), to order additional handmade examples. The poster is currently stiffly rolled, and needs work to straighten for framing. A holy grail lot for any antique stick collector or researcher. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
