The greatest player to ever grace the game of hockey throughout its entire history, the 1981-82 season marked the third season of his career for Wayne Gretzky, who was now the face of the National Hockey League in every way imaginable, broke several records, including the record of 50 goals in 50 games, set by Maurice Richard and Mike Bossy, by scoring 50 goals in only 39 games and also broke Phil Esposito's record of 76 goals in a season with 92, his own assists record of 109 which was set the prior season with 120, and his own point total of 164 which was also set the prior season with 212. He was the first, and thus far only, player to ever score 200 points in a season. The Oilers set a record for most goals in a season with 417, in which Gretzky scored or assisted on over half. Needless to say, it was a season for the ages.
Offered here, we present this replica Edmonton Oilers jersey from the 1981-82 season that has been customized as a Wayne Gretzky offering. A vintage Oilers game-worn jersey of an unknown player that has been recustomized into the Gretzky it is today, the heavy mesh garment made by Sandow SK si void of any tagging affixed to the inner collar but measures out to roughly a size "52". Accented over the reverse hem with a Sandow SK logo heat-pressed over the rear hem, the front of the jersey is decorated with the well-known Oilers oil drop team crest done in flight satin with Gretzky's number “99” gracing the sleeves and verso in tri-layer numerals of matching material. With “Gretzky” having been spelt out across the affixed matching mesh nameplate in single layer blue flight satin letters, the all-important “International Year of Disabled Persons 1981” patch, that appears original to the jersey, is present over the right shoulder. Sporting a loop style fight strap on the interior, the original numbers and nameplate were removed and the Gretzky ones were added on though it is important to state that the jersey was never intended to be worn or used by Wayne himself. Exhibiting good game-use throughout via things like stick marks, board burns and coloured paint transfers plus a small unrepaired hole near the right cuff, twenty (20) or so team repairs are observed over the sleeves with the once bright white mesh now darker from wear, multiple washings and age. With interior wear found via some pilling at both elbows, the jersey is an excellent alternative to get you as close as you can get to owning a real Gretzky game-worn jersey but at a far more reasonable price point!
