One in a long line of noble Montreal team captains to contribute monumental effort to the Canadiens' cause during his memorable 16-year career, Bob Gainey helped the Habs to five Stanley Cup titles while combining amazing defensive play with 239 career goals. Offered here, is this Montreal Canadiens captain’s jersey donned by Gainey during the early-to-mid-1980s, circa 1982-83, and it’s been photo-matched!
Made by Maska with partially detached tagging still affixed to the inner collar, a washed out size tag is found alongside it with a size “52” designation just able to be made out. Sporting the famed “CH” crest of Les Canadiens over the front of the jersey, the distinguished captain’s “C” is proudly sewn over the left breast with Gainey’s number “23” sewn to the sleeves and verso in blue-over-red dual layer tackle twill numerals. “Gainey” is spelt out in single layer blue twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate that is original to the jersey. Featuring a customized garter-style fight strap on the interior, the jersey sports excellent game-use. Dark stick marks are seen over the front, sleeves and reverse while an unfathomable amount of team repairs, totaling no less than 140 by our count, are seen throughout the entirety of the garment with left sleeve carrying the bulk of them but followed close behind by everywhere else one could find them. Additional wear is observed through numerous board burns and board paint transfers to the sleeves, front and reverse as is pilling on the interior at the elbows and shoulder seams.
Regarding the aforementioned photo-match, Getty Image #81863554 (Undated Circa 1983 vs Quebec) is matched to the team repair at the top left of the Canadiens crest as well as the distinctive fold lines inside the team crest and to the team repair directly under the bottom blue stripe at the left of the left side seam on Gainey's right hip. A beautiful battle-hardened garment worn by one of the most reliable players to ever suit up in the famed red, white and blue of Les Canadiens, don’t miss out on this one!
