Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
One of the earliest hockey signatures in existence, with it's rarity equally matched by the noteworthy prominence of the signer, we have a postcard autographed by Edward Stanley, 17 Earl of Derby and son of Lord Stanley, along with a 1902 Preston Guild mug that pictures Lord Stanley, and two 1902 Preston Guild medallions. Stanley was a member of the Rideau Hall Rebels in the late-1880s/early-1890s – or officially, the Vice-Regal and Parliamentary Hockey Club - formed in 1884. He played with the club into the early-1890s. He was also the inspiration for the idea of Lord Stanley's donation of the Stanley Cup. Signed "Derby" in dark fountain pen ink, there is residue to the reverse of the postcard from scrapbook removal. The mug is 4" in height and features gilding, and remains in near mint condition, apparently never used. Both medallions are 1 1/4", with one showing the guild logo and "1902", with Lord Stanley on the reverse, while the second has the guild coat of arms and "1902", with Lord Stanley and his wife on the reverse. Both medallions show surface wear. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
