Serving in the First World War, the 61st Overseas Battalion formed a hockey team that included HOFer Bullet Joe Simpson that won the Allan Cup as the top amateur team in Canada in 1916. This postcard features the team including Simpson. A studio shot, the full team is pictured, with the Allan Cup front and center. The postal reverse is filled out and has toning with a bit of staining, with the postmark embossed and visible through the front. The second Winnipeg postcard is generic, with the period text on the reverse to include "I was at the game when the Forts beat the 61st" (Fort Osbourne Hockey Team - they competed against the 61st Battalion). The pins include a lapel pin worn on the uniform along with a "sweetheart" pin, with these usually given from a soldier to a girlfriend or loved one. This is only the second 61st Battalion postcard we have ever handled, with the first example selling in 2006 for just under $600.00. From the Brent Sobie antique hockey and baseball collection.
