Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/27/2023
A special single game moment took place on September 25th, 1993 when an exhibition game between the Los Angeles Kings and their IHL minor league affiliate, the Phoenix Roadrunners, saw Wayne Gretzky, Kelly Hrudey, Tomas Sandstrom, Charlie Huddy and Shawn McEachern “demoted” to the minor leagues to play against their NHL teammates. Won the Roadrunners in a shootout by a final score of 6-5, “The Great One” would tally two goals in the one-off contest. Offered here, is this Phoenix Roadrunners jersey customized as a Wayne Gretzky that has also been signed by him. A Bauer made garment with the company’s “ProWear” and size “52” tags affixed to the inner collar along with the original retail tags, the rear hem sports both Bauer and IHL emblems embroidered into it. Decorated over the front with a Roadrunners team crest that features both chain-stitched and embroidered details and the distinguished captain's "C" over the left breast, the sleeves and verso have been accented with Wayne’s famed “99” in dual-layer blue-over-grey tackle twill numerals while “Gretzky” is spelt out in matching style across the affixed matching nameplate. Featuring pro on-ice style attributes such as a fight strap and reinforced elbows, Gretzky has signed the second number “9” on the reverse with a bold black marker ink signature that has faded heavily over time as have the reverse numbers themselves. In overall excellent condition otherwise, this exceedingly rare jersey makes for a great conversation starter when it comes to your all-important collection. A Shawn Chaulk LOA will accompany the piece.
