Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/2/2023
Despite playing only 177 games in the uniform of the Edmonton Oilers, Curtis Joseph backstopped the club to first round upsets of the Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the 1997 and 1998 playoffs respectively and still sits 2nd all-time in Oilers franchise history for shutouts with 14. Up for grabs here, is this pro replica of Joseph’s Edmonton Oilers mask done by Frank Cipra that has been twice signed by the star goaltender. Featuring “Cujo’s” iconic mad dog paint job that he became known for during his career plastered across the crown and chin and personal “Cujo” logos over each side and back plate in the Oilers copper, navy and white colors, the Itech made shell is accented with a white strapping harness and white cats eye cage on the front. On the interior of the mask at the chin, the signature of noted mask artist Frank Cipra is observed in black along with a “98” year designation alongside it. Remaining in good condition with only light chips around the edges and chin, a quartet of chips are present over the right side upper head area as well. The cage shows light wear via chipping and a bit of rusting and all the padding on the inside and the chin cup remain clean and in good condition. Adding to its appeal, Joseph has signed the mask over the left ear area and on the back plate with gold ink signatures with both showing some fading, the heaviest being exhibited to the autograph at the left ear.
