Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2024

A veteran of twenty-two (22) National Hockey League seasons with the likes of the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Minnesota North Stars, Atlanta Flames and Washington Capitals, Doug Mohns would win the most coveted prize in junior hockey, the Memorial Cup, with the Barrie Flyers in 1951 and 1953 and be selected to play in the National Hockey League All-Star Game on seven (7) occasions. An early slapshot expert who combined skating speed and breakout passing skills with rugged reliability, offered here is this Atlanta Flames jersey attributed to have been worn by Mohns during his short stint with the club in 1973-74. A heavy durene knit garment made by Rawlings, a label from the brand displaying a size "50" designation is affixed to the inner collar and is of a "doubled" style that we have seen on other '73-'74 examples. Decorated over the front with a Flames team crest in layered tackle twill, the sleeves and verso of the garment have had the number "2" sewn to them in dual layer white-over-yellow tackle twill numerals. Exhibiting overall excellent game-use, light stick marks are found through the crest on the front and over the lower front as well while light red coloured board paint transfer marks are observed over the lower front and left sleeve while a couple of light board burns/slash marks are present over the front as well. Also showing black coloured ink like spot stains over the front and reverse hems plus a small hole through the first layer of material over the back of the collar, there is also excellent pilling and wear throughout the inside of the jersey, mostly contained to the elbows. Additionally, the original fight strap was carefully removed by a team trainer, something we have seen on other examples from the '73-'74 season as well, and evidence of its former placement can barely be made out.
