One of the first four Russian players to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup, Alex Kovalev spent parts of five seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. Worn by Kovalev in the Dec 4, 2008 contest vs the Rangers (6-2 Montreal victory), we have his “1915-16” Canadiens centennial Set 1 alternate captain's jersey. Labeled on the inner collar with a size “58+” flag tag, a handwritten number “1” for set 1 is found within the outline of the Reebok logo that adorns the back neckline. The front of the jersey, featuring the NHL shield logo at the neck, showcases the circa 1915-16 style team crest in tackle twill. This beautiful solid red tie-neck has been accented with dual-colour tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers while “Kovalev” is found laid across the matching nameplate, with the important centennial patch over the right shoulder. A hologram has also been affixed to the reverse “7” numbered “998888”, with the team patch over the inside hem numbered “A01365”, with both matching the accompanying LOA from the Canadiens. Worn for just a single contest (Kovalev had 16:28 minutes of ice time), the jersey shows no discernible wear. Getty Image #84014501 (Dec 4, 2008) appears to the show the loose white thread at the bottom left of the "A" in the team crest, but the image is not sufficient enough to call a definitive photo match. Overall a fantastic jersey from a season that honoured the illustrious history of one of hockey’s greatest franchises.
