Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
A quarter of offerings from the middle and later years of the rival league, the World Hockey Association, up on the auction block here are complete sets of O-Pee-Chee’s 1974-75, 1975-76, 1976-77 and 1977-78 WHA releases. The 1974-75 set, comprised of 66 cards, in our eyes falls in the high-grade range of EX-MT/NM with the lone exception being card #1 of “The Howes” that displays in EX vicinity because the top corners show dings. Crisp EX-MT/NM offerings of Cheevers, Mahovlich, Hull, Henderson and Plante are included as well as #53-Checklist that is in the same EX-MT/NM condition range. The 1975-76 set (132-cards), consistently made up of EX-MT range cardboard in our opinion, with however the key Mark Howe rookie card falling in grade to the vicinity of VG-EX/EX due to dings on all four corners. Card #131-Checkist as well as #34-Plante, #65-Hull All-Star, #66-Howe All-Star and #100-Howe are all in EX/EX-MT range. The ’76-77 set, once again a 132-card release, is another high grade example with the cards consistently in the range of EX-MT with many EX-MT/NM offerings also present in our opinion despite having some of the cards display O-Pee-Chee’s well known and common centering issues such as #50-Howe, #65-Hull All-Star, #72-Howe All Star, #100-Hull and #111-Mahovlich. #117-Checklist remains unmarked with some wear to the top left corner. Lastly, the ’77-78 cards, which make up a 66-card set, once again are high grade offerings in the neighbourhood of EX-MT/NM. Roughly 10 cards from the card are miscut, showing their neighbour beside them on the sheet including those of #1-Howe, #50-Hull and #58-Checklist. An instant WHA collection or inventory awaits your bid.
