Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023

Perhaps the most famous hockey card set of all-time, cards from O-Pee-Chee’s 1979-80 release came in wax packs that contained 14 cards and cost young ones 20 cents with the rookie cards of Wayne Gretzky coveted by all by seasons end. Featuring good colours and centering along with corners and edges that show only light wear, this copy of card #18 picturing Wayne Gretzky that has just recently earned an EX-MT 6 designation from PSA leads the way for this 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee complete set of 396 cards. The rest of the 395 cards that make up the set are also pleasing examples that fall in the same neighbourhood as the Gretzky, with majority being EX-MT, EX-MT+ and NM conditions while only a few EX/EX+ examples showing light edge/corner dings also present. The most important cards in the set fall in the aforementioned EX-MT to NM range but are plagued by centering issues that is common with this release including the important second year card #230 of Mike Bossy as well as #150-Dryden, #185-Hull and #200-Lafleur. Card #175 of Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, is also EX-MT/NM and has avoided the centering issues. The team checklists and checklists are unmarked with #346-checklist 265-396 showing a ding in the top left corner worth mentioning. All in all, an attention-grabbing Gretzky rookie card (in a new PSA holder) and the rest of the group create a satisfying offering that should satisfy upon arrival to our lucky winner.
