90 miles southeast of Buffalo, Hornell lies in the middle of New York State, and despite a modest population 100 years ago of just over 10,000, the small town first fielded a semi-professional baseball team in 1903. Competing against clubs from nearby Hornellsville, Corning, Elmira, Penn Yan and others locations, the team lasted until the league was disbanded in 1906. This rare Hornell baseball uniform from the era includes the pants and socks. Produced by the famous Draper & Maynard company, the jersey is a desirable full-collar button-up pullover specimen with "Hornell" in royal blue felt appliqued to the chest with an "E" diamond design to the left sleeve. "Watt" - presumably the player who wore the jersey, is handwritten to the interior. Predating the use of numbers, all three mother of pearl buttons remain affixed, with the antique jersey in beautiful condition, sporting just some dirt staining to the lower front. The matching pants feature a label from D&M, with both buttons intact, with a hole near the reverse pocket and dirt staining throughout. Lastly, the wool uniform socks in navy blue with single large white stripe have intact stirrups, and show wear from use including holes and repairs. Full-collar turn-of-the-century jerseys are highly collected, with this example ideal for any advanced uniform or antique baseball collection.
