Originally drafted by the Blackhawks 199th overall in 1983, it would take seven years for Dominik Hasek to come over to North America and join the Chicago organization due to the Iron Curtain. In a system that already included Ed Belfour, Hasek would only play 25 games over two seasons in Chicago before being traded to Buffalo and blossoming into one of the NHL’s top goalies. Hailing from his rookie season of 1991-92, we offer this stick used by Hasek with the Blackhawks. A Sher-Wood PMPG model in red and white, “Hasek” is stamped to the upper shaft with the stain retaining its original white tape jobs on the knob/handle and paddle with black tape over the blade. Of note, the black on the blade is vintage tape and photos of Hasek from that season do show him as using black on some of his sticks. It is possible that the stick was reused by Hasek in practice as there is noticeable damage to the stick under the black tape which is described below. Showing moderate game-use, puck marks are seen over the paddle and shaft while small amounts of red post paint transfer is seen on the backside of the upper shaft. Wear to the stick’s factory white paint is exhibited along with dried black residue on the back of the paddle. Additionally, a crack from a shot is seen near the top of the paddle on the edge along with a chip under the black tape at the top edge of the heel. The stick has been signed with black marker by what appears to be 12 members of the 1991-92 Blackhawks including Hasek, Chelios, Graham, Williams, Hudson, Gilbert and Noonan with the other five unidentifiable. The autographs largely remain bold and legible while the signature of Gilbert shows smudging.
