A classic quartet of O-Pee-Chee releases hailing from the first few years of Wayne Gretzky’s incredible career are featured here in this lot consisting of complete assemblies of the Canadian manufactures 1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84 and 1985-86 releases. Starting with the 1981-82’s, the 396 cards included are in the best condition overall of the four included offerings and includes the key first year cardboard of #63 Denis Savard (EX-MT), #107 Jari Kurri (EX to EX-MT – slight dent at the right border) #108 Glenn Anderson (EX-MT - off-centered), #111 Paul Coffey (EX-MT – light corner wear), #120 Andy Moog (EX – edge wear/dings and light corner wear), #161 Dino Ciccarelli (EX-MT – off-center with a slight top right corner ding) and #269 Peter Stastny (EX-MT to NM – off-center). Card #1 of defensive standout Ray Bourque displays with 80-20 centering and corner wear to put it in the scope of VG-EX to EX condition while the 2nd year card of Mark Messier, #118 in the set displays with 90-10 centering but is better off and in the range of EX to EX-MT condition. Lastly, the cards of Wayne Gretzky, his regular release and super action offerings (#106 and #125) are both around EX-MT to NM with his regular issue showing a diamond cut. All three checklists remain unmarked and fall between EX-MT and NM.
The 1982-83 set is found to largely be in a low-grade range with many of the cards displaying with creases or poor corners worth noting. highlighted by the rookie cards of #105 Grant Fuhr, #123 Ron Francis, #307 Joe Mullen and #380 Dale Hawerchuk, the Fuhr example presents in the range of VG while the other three are all around the scope of VG-EX to EX conditions. Mark Messier leads the star cards condition wise, being in the range of VG-EX to EX while cards #1 and #106 of Wayne Gretzky and #101 of Paul Coffey all are seen as being in the vicinity of VG. Ray Bourque, card #7 brings up the rear with his card around the proximity of G to VG with most of the above listed cards showing the previously mentioned crease and/or poor corners. The three checklists, #121, #261 and #396 in the set fall in the ranges of G, FR to G and G to VG respectively with the first two having been marked partially.
O-Pee-Chee’s 1983-84 class is led by rookie offerings of #268 Pelle Lindbergh (EX – 90-10 centering) and #376 Scott Stevens (EX-MT to NM) with the rest of the 394 cards all in a fairly uniform condition range of EX to EX-MT with some exceptions while some of the main stars are a bit worse off. Gretzky cards once again create a nice little group in the set with his regular issue card #29 found in the vicinity of VG with a poor top right corner while others include 23-Gretzky/Messier (VG-EX to EX), 212-Gretzky Record Breaker (EX-MT) and 215-Gretzky Goal Leaders (EX to EX-MT). Other notables include card #25 of Paul Coffey around the scope of EX to EX-MT, #39 of Mark Messier (G to VG – all four corners worn) and #45 of Ray Bourque (VG-EX to EX). All three checklist cards are unmarked those #134 is creased.
Lastly, the 1985-86 group is found in an average condtion vicinity of EX to EX-MT, again with some exceptions, particularly on the key RC of Mario Lemieux that is found in the scope of PR to FR, displaying rounded corners and multiple creases. Lemieux’s rookie scoring leaders offering is much better off, found in the range of EX-MT to NM, mirroring the conditions seen on Wayne Gretzky’s Goal and Scoring Leaders cards that fall at #257 and #259 in the checklist respectively. Sticking with “The Great One” is regular issue card #120 is seen as being around G to VG because of creasing while his Assist Leaders card, #258, is in the range of EX condition with small surface dents to note. Cards 29-Yzerman (80-20 centering), 40-Bourque (bottom right corner ding), 110-Lindbergh and 177-Messier are all around the EX to EX-MT vicinity while cards 85-Coffey (bottom right corner wear and small surface imperfections) and 237-MacInnis (RC – right border dent) are the last of the notables with both in the proximity of EX condition. Both checklist cards remain unmarked.
