Hailing from a season that saw the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the New York Yankees 4 game to 0 to claim the 1963 World Series and hand the Bronx Bombers their first EVER series sweep in franchise history, up for grabs here is the beautiful 1963 Topps baseball near complete set (575/576) that includes nine (9) PSA slabbed specimens. Starting with the batting orders worth of graded cards, the group is led by a NM-MT 8 (ST) offering of Tony Oliva’s key rookie card that also pictures Ed Kranepool, Bob Bailey and Max Alvis. The stain in question is small in size and appears over the front between all four players. A pair of EX-MT 6 cards are highlighted next including those of “Pride of N.L.” that displays the image of Willie Mays and Stan Musial standing together as well as the card of “Hammerin Hank”, Hank Aaron. Other cards in a respectable mid-grade range include an EX+ 5.5 of Frank Robinson, EX 5’s of Mickey Mantle and Ernie Banks, VG-EX 4’s of “Bombers’ Best” (Tom Tresh, Mickey Mantle, Bobby Richardson) and Sandy Koufax and finally, the sought after rookie card of Pete Rose, pictured with Al Weis, Ken McMullen and Pedro Gonzalez, that has been deemed worthy of a VG 3 mark. Having well been cared for, all the holders remain in excellent condition. Of note, cards #496 and #553, the rookies of Dalkowski, Newman, Bouldin and Smith as well as Stargell, Davis, Gosger and Herrnstein were also submitted to PSA for grading but were not slabbed due to not meeting the minimum size requirements. An assembly of mostly high-grade EX-MT range cards with some better EX-MT/NM examples present as well, the set is missing just card #199 of Joe Amalfitano to be complete. A small handful of cards are exceptions due to flaws such as ink marks, corners, tape and having been miscut including #’s 15, 18, 163, 165, 179, 245, 275, 345, 366, 466, 467, 501, 503, 505, 506, 522, 574 and 575. For the cardboard displaying star players, those in the previously mentioned EX-MT/NM vicinity include 115-Yastrzemski, 446-Ford and 550-Snider while those close to the scope of EX-MT+ include 25-Kaline, 415-Gibson (slight bottom left corner ding) and 540-Clemente (90-10 centering top-to-bottom). EX-MT vicinity examples include 330-Mays (slight corner wear), 340-Berra, 412-“Dodgers Big Three” (Koufax/Drysdale/Podres) and 490-McCovey (small amount of corner fuzz) while those around EX/EX-MT include 242-“Power Plus” (Banks/Aaron), 250-Musial (left side top and bottom corner ding), 440-Marichal (bottom right corner faded) and 500-Killebrew (80-20 centering plus a wax stain). Finally, cards #120 of Roger Maris and #472 of Lou Brock are in the range of EX, both showing corner wear. The checklist cards all remain unmarked and in a condition range that is on par with the rest of the set. Swing for the fences with this home run of a set that is sure to please our lucky winning bidder.
