Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Winter 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/28/2023
Consisting of 8 total games, Super Series ’76 featured HC CSKA Moscow (The Red Army) and Krylya Sovetov Moscow (Soviet Wings) of the Soviet Championship League taking on NHL clubs, with each Soviet team playing 4 games. The series is well remembered for the Red Army game against the Montreal Canadiens on New Year’s Eve, a contest widely considered as one of the greatest games in history. At the completion of the eight games, the two Soviet clubs had a combined record of 5-1-2. Offered here, is this Inuit soapstone carving presented by the NHLPA to participants in the series. With its recipient unknown, the carving, depicting a seal, measures approx. 7 ½” long by 3” high at its tallest point. Remaining in good condition and free from cracks or breaks, the carving shows light surface wear from age and handling, with a gold coloured plaque listing “NHL – Soviet Series 1975-76 N.H.L.P.A” applied to the base. A sticker reading “Canada Eskimo Art” is affixed to the underside of the piece. A fantastic memento from when teams from behind the Iron Curtain competed against NHL clubs.
