Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2023
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 5/3/2023
The Great One had scored a still-record 92 goals and posted his first of four 200-plus point seasons the year before he appeared on O-Pee-Chee display boxes in 1982-83, with this box of 48 unopened packs sure to contain a variety of cards picturing Wayne Gretzky, in the midst of rewriting the NHL record book. Rookie cards of Grant Fuhr, Ron Francis, Dale Hawerchuk, Joe Mullen and Neal Broten are other possibilities, as are grading opportunities, should pack-busting be your choice. The packs sold for 25 cents back in the day, with ten cards per pack. Before being sealed by Baseball Card Exchange shrink wrap, the packs within were examined and confirmed as being unopened by BBCE, with the firm’s identifying label on the box’s underside. Sporting wear worth noting to the edges and corners on both the top and bottom of the box, the top lid shows its original scotch tape that has been cut as well as scuffing and creases to the red border as well as light wear of similar style to the image of Gretzky while the die-cut area above “The Great One’s” head having been partially perforated. With numerous possibilities on the inside, the questions becomes whether or not the lure of pack fresh early-1980s offerings become too much to endure for our lucky winning bidder to keep this survivor sealed!
