Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

An exceptional opportunity for collectors of Canadian Football League material is this captivating ensemble of Nalley’s coins featuring members of the five teams that made up the CFL’s Western Conference back in the day. Infrequently offered in complete set form, the 100-coin assembly is displayed here in ultra-coveted plastic shields in the shape of a football field – ingenious. Reportedly apparently offered in boxes of Nalley’s Potato Chips in western Canada, the coins have team color-coded backs and fit securely into the shields, all of the latter having been in this instance preserved in what we rate jaw-dropping NM-MT to MINT condition, with not a single edge crack detected. The lineup is headlined by CFL standouts Joe Kapp and Willie Fleming of B.C. (the Lions would win the Grey Cup at season’s end), Calgary’s Wayne Harris and Jerry Keeling, Edmonton’s Tommy Joe Coffey and Johnny Bright, Saskatchewan’s Ron Lancaster and George Reed and Kenny Ploen, Leo Lewis, Frank Rigney and Bud Grant of Winnipeg. Coin condition is top-notch too, with NM-or-better looking to be the norm and the images boasting original gloss - superb. One rough Roughriders coin edge (67-Ptacek) and a little scrape in the surface of teammate 68-Habig is all that is spotted. And get this, when Andy Malycky authored his informative/appreciated “Collecting Canadian Football” guide in 2010, it read in part, “no packaging advertising the coin promotion or ephemera relating to ordering the cap holders is known to exist.” That’s not the case here, with an image of coins and a shield appearing on a little cardboard box piece measuring 1-3/4” by 3-1/4” upping the appeal, and another similar image on paper stock and possibly cut from an order form(?) – very cool. Good luck with, like we said at the top, this exceptional opportunity, likely the first of its kind.
