Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

An eight-year veteran of the Pacific Coast Hockey League and the Western Hockey League, Joe Evans would spend half of it in Victoria, playing for the Cougars. Presented here is this trio of items hailing from Evans’ personal collection. An early-1950s Victoria Cougars folk art wood carving depicting Evans is featured and is appropriately titled “Joe Evans in action” at the bottom. Hand done, the 9” x 14 ½” carving presents in good condition with bright colours while the artist has signed the back of the piece, which also features “O” rings with twine to hang the piece up. A circa 1940s stand-up photo display of Evans is also included, this time showcasing him in the uniform of the Halifax Canadians. Measuring 7 ¾” x 9 ½” at its largest points, damage is observed at the bottom hand and near the toe of the stick in the form of paper loss while the rest of the piece displays well with only light surface and edge wear. The stand for the piece is still present. Lastly, a pair of CCM Professional game-used skates round out the lot dating to circa 1950s. The skates are attributed to when Evans was playing pro hockey but this is not confirmed and they could be post playing career offerings. Stamped a size 9 on the bottom of each, both skates still have their original laces present while exhibiting heavy use through scuffs, cuts and rusting to the blades, one of which is broken near the back.
