Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Made to cover the hands of the man that will forever sit alone atop the top of the National Hockey League’s all-time points leader list, we have here a pair of Easton Air gloves worn by The Great One during his first season in the Big Apple, 1996-97. Pro 4400 model mitts in the Rangers colours of red, white and blue, the gloves feature Wayne’s signature long and open cuffs with leather palms that remain in excellent condition with no holes, with light black rubbing shown on the right palm from his familiar “Jack the Gripper” grip. With Easton logo patches stitched into each cuff, the gloves show Gretzky’s “99” printed on each glove. The gloves show moderate-to-heavy wear and cracking to the leather material of each glove from aging while game wear exhibited includes the previously mentioned rubbing on the right palm as well as stick marks and board paint transfers. A letter of provenance is included, printed on Wayne Gretzky Roller Hockey Centers letterhead details that the gloves were given by Gretzky to the centre under the guidance of his former agent, Mike Barnett. When the business closed in 2004, they were gifted to the Center's director in appreciation for his seven years at the helm. The letter is signed at the bottom by the former director of the building behind the Wayne Gretzky signage, Douglas Jones. An incredible offering from hockey’s all-time greatest player that is well worn and well documented.
