Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022

“That ‘70s Show” of crisp clean cardboard that our consignor assembled back in the day yields a very pleasing assembly here, with O-Pee-Chee’s condition sensitive 1973-74 cards overall displaying beautifully, dominated by NM-or-better examples. Yes, intermittent white corner specks can be expected but the set ranks as one of the nicest ’73-74 ensembles that this assessor recalls handling, with like-new surfaces, sharp corners and smooth edges a treat to come upon, although some rough cuts are observed. A light corner ding drops the Larry Robinson rookie card to EX-MT, with Billy Smith’s RC (edge nick, corner touches) similar. NM with a rough right edge is 30-Orr, while the three unmarked checklists are in the EX-MT to NM realm. The 1st Series entries, with the exception of 14, all have grey backs, while 2nd Series cards are mostly (all but 26) white backs, with just five (commons) being condition exceptions and meriting upgrades. The stack of inserts – they’re actually from previous seasons - also exhibit minimal handling and offer various possibilities, with some heavy duplication among 58 team logos (NM average with some original gum powder still present), with ’73-74 Islanders and Penguins team rings tossed-in. Quantities of the team logos are as follows: Boston 1, Buffalo 3 (one is the lone low grade example throughout), California 8, Chicago 5, Detroit 5, Montreal 8, Philadelphia 2, Pittsburgh 5, St. Louis 3, Toronto 2, Vancouver 4 and NHL logo 4.
