Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction December 2022
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/13/2022
Required for a master set of Bee Hive photos and surely still on the want lists of some hobbyists is this team photo of the 1944-45 Maple Leafs, the likes of which reportedly introduced the Group 2 hockey pictures, with the Leafs capturing Lord Stanley’s silverware at season’s end in exciting fashion. Featuring a young Ted Kennedy (he led the team in scoring in his second season), big d-man Babe Pratt (he scored the Stanley Cup winner in Game 7 in Detroit) and rookie goalie Frank McCool (he shutout the Red Wings in the first three(!) games of the finals to set a record), the offered example (9” x 12-3/4”) is in acceptable low grade condition, with much of the wear being peripheral. Multiple pin holes at the corners are mostly limited to the blue backing which includes a few edge tears and paper loss in the corner regions of the reverse. Light creases and bends to the picture itself (approximately 8” x 12”) are deemed not-drastic – you’ll be pleased to have finally secured the scarcity. Toronto had finished in third place but upset record-setting Maurice Richard (50 goals) and the Canadiens in six semi-final games before edging Detroit.
